Music Video Analysis TASK 1.8

Updated: Nov 30, 2023

The goal of Task 1.8 was to understand how and why music videos are successful. The first step was to count the number of cuts and locations in music videos by analysing them. Additionally, I noticed that a lot of music videos had a variety of shots.

Here are some music videos that I have analysed:

Duration: 3:53

Cuts: 153

Locations: 10

Durations Of Shots: 1.5 Seconds Per Clip

After analysing this music video, I have calculated the number of cuts and clips that are used in this music video. This music video had different types of shots that were shot, and there are lots of close-ups in this music video to show tears and emotions. An average music video has at least 100 cuts; however, this one has 153 cuts, which is a lot for a music video. The main reason that there are lots of cuts is that this genre of music is fast-paced, unlike other songs.

Duration: 4:16

Cuts: 128

Locations: 22

Durations Of Shots: 2 Seconds Per Clip

Coolio's Gangsta Paradise is an example of a longer music video that has fewer cuts than most short music videos. This music video had a variety of shots, and most importantly, it has more B-roll footage than A-roll, as this music video has been taken from a movie. This song is about life in the streets and why people get into crime, this music video shows the story of many teens that get into crime.

Duration: 3:06

Cuts: 70

Locations: 8

Durations Of Shots: 2.5 Seconds Per Clip

KSI's Not Over Yet is a great example of a music video that doesn't have that many cuts or locations but works. There is lots of creativity in this music video. There are lots of effects, unlike other music videos.
